Fines on broadcasters are not censorship

FINES ON BROADCASTERS ARE NOT CENSORSHIP

[Commentary] Tate does not believe the role of the Federal Communications Commission is to act as a censor. In fact, the Commission is barred by statute from doing so. However, courts have confirmed FCC authority to sanction broadcasters that air indecent material. In the end, it is the responsibility of the FCC to enforce the laws that Congress has enacted. Commissioner Tate takes this duty very seriously. She also believes broadcasters have a critical responsibility to keep the airwaves free from indecent and profane material, during those hours children are most likely to be in the audience. The FCC we will continue to investigate complaints, enforce the law, and protect the nation's most valuable natural resource: our children.
