DC Legal Hackers is the DC Chapter of a growing movement of more than twenty legal hacking, technology, or innovation groups around the country. A legal hacker is someone who cares about the intersection of law and technology and seeks to improve legal practice through technology while simultaneously using legal skills to promote technological innovation and exploration.

The FBI–Apple encryption dispute has been hailed the "biggest tech case this year". The dispute refers to a district court order by the FBI under the All Writs Act to compel Apple to create a new version of their phone's iOS operating system that could disable certain security features prohibiting investigation of a phone linked to the San Bernardino attacks. Apple filed a motion to vacate the court order and since the FBI has unlocked the phone without any new software in place. This dispute has everything: drama, intrigue, encryption, due process, freedom of speech!
