Commerce Secretary Gary Locke will annnounce a new Web site to help increase computer and Internet skills in America. Locke will join U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski (D-MD) and Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD).

The center is funded in part by the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunication and Information Administration’s (NTIA) Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP), a Recovery Act initiative that is investing $4 billion in the construction or upgrade of more than 100,000 miles of broadband networks, enhancing and expanding public computer centers, and initiating programs to encourage broadband adoption among populations where it is lagging.

BTOP is one the largest grant programs ever administered by the Department of Commerce. During Locke’s tenure as Commerce Secretary, NTIA built this multi-billion dollar program from the ground up and under tight deadlines, ultimately investing in approximately 230 projects that will help improve education, health care and public safety.

Coppin State received funding from the Commerce Department’s Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. With this funding, they established the Coppin Heights-Rosemont Family Computer Center and are successfully providing broadband access and computer education to the surrounding community.
